The main international football competition for African nations is the Africa Cup of Nations. Since its founding in 1957, there have been numerous adjustments. It has been contested every two years since 1968 and in 2013 it moved to odd-numbered years to avoid conflicting with the World Cup.

Egypt now holds the record for the most AFCON victories with seven, Cameroon is second with five, and Ghana is third with four.

Senegal is the current champion after defeating Egypt in the AFCON 2021 final and winning their first championship.

Some of the greatest footballers to ever compete on the african scene have participated, including Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast), Sadio Mane (Senegal), Mohamed Salah (Egypt) Jay Jay Okocha (Nigeria).

Olympic gold medalist and legendary Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o is the highest goal scorer with 18, while Laurent Pokou of the Ivory Coast is second with 14 goals.
