Crouser of the United States takes gold while Enekwechi of Nigeria loses in the men's shot put

On Thursday, Nigerian Chukwuebuka Enekwechi was unable to win a medal in the men's shot put final at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. After throwing 19.74m on his third attempt, the Nigerian athlete finished 12th and lost to Crouser of the United States.

On his first effort, he fouled, and on his second attempt, he threw 18.87 meters.

Enekwechi, who was ranked among the top 12 in the event before the Games, created history on Tuesday, he made history as he became the first Nigerian to qualify for the shot put final.

Ryan Crouser, the world record holder, won the men's shot put event, breaking his own Olympic record.

After his five previous tries all went above the 22.52m that won him gold at the 2016 Rio Games, the American set a new Olympic record with a best of 23.30m on his sixth and final attempt.

Crouser, 28, led a rematch of the Rio podium, with compatriot and world champion Joe Kovacs grabbing silver with 22.65m and Tomas Walsh of New Zealand getting bronze (22.47).

Crouser put in a solid performance in the scorching heat of Tokyo's Olympic Stadium, taking the lead on his first attempt and never relinquishing it.

Crouser, who was beaten to silver by Kovacs at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, had clearly raised expectations.

After his triumph was confirmed, he dashed to his kit bag, put on a cowboy hat, and handed a sheet of paper to the television cameras that said, "Grandpa, we did it, 2020 Olympic champion."
Crouser grew up in an athletic family: his father Mitch was an alternate on the discus squad at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, and his uncle Brian was a two-time Olympian in the javelin, and cousin Sam represented the United States in the javelin in Rio.
